Capstone Artist Statement
My work explores the intricate beauty of nature by closely observing people, animals, fruit, and more. In moments of stillness, I notice details like the gentle unspoken expression of a dead bear or the rhythmic crashing of waves against the rocks. These moments remind me that I’m not the most important thing happening. When I’m in nature, my everyday worries such as deadlines and uncertainties start to fade. Nature is vast and complex, and it gives me the space to laugh, cry, and think about the bigger picture.
It’s where I go to feel grounded. I run, climb, watch, feel, and breathe freely outside. That’s why I include natural elements that feel personal to me in my art. The pomegranate, for example, fascinates me with its complexity, rich color, and mother-like qualities. The deer mirrors my own birthmarks, demeanor, and hair color, creating a quiet connection between myself and the animal.
I focus on watercolor because it’s the most effective way to capture fleeting observations. Its fluidity mirrors nature’s ever-changing beauty, allowing me to record experiences before they disappear. Metal, on the other hand, brings a lasting tangible element to my work, allowing me to hold and remember. Each medium serves a different purpose, helping me respond to the world around me in the most natural way.
My art encourages viewers as well as myself to slow down and reconnect with the natural world. I hope it inspires someone to step outside and remember what’s out there.
